Context

Photographed in collaboration with FRAME Dance Company in Houston. Two photographers and a film maker shoot the same choreographed piece, each in a different setting of their choice. A gallery exhibit was installed and the dancers came out to perform mingling with the audience as they viewed the installed work, allowing the different visual artists’ interpretations to be seen in context with the live performance. The viewers were encouraged to add a further layer by capturing the event with their cellphones and cameras and sharing on social media.

I initially shot this in chiaroscuro black and white, freezing the action. Towards the end of the session, I realized that what I was really seeing were traces of color in movement as the dancers twirled in front of the camera. So I asked, “Can we do another take?” and dialed down the shutter speed…
