A drum, kept to the right of an altar inside a shrine, is used during chanting in a Tibetan Buddhist Temple in the mountains of Ladakh. It is said that “its sound symbolises the end of the cycle of rebirth which leads to happiness.”

奉納 (Hōnō) means dedication in Japanese. I photographed this at a at Fushimi Inari, a Shinto shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The simple, sincere devotion expressed in every detail reminds me to live a more purposeful life in the little things.

Beyond the ten thousand gates of Fushimi Inari I found this twig floating in the air in the bamboo forest. Looking closely one can see the spider web that holds it, so delicate it reminds me of Arachne, the gifted weaver who dared challenge Athena. The simplicity of the scene makes me want to tread lightly as I journey this Earth.
